The word chapati is derived from the Sanskrit word चर्पटी (charpaṭī), which comes from चर्प (charpa), meaning “flat.” Chapati is a form of roti or rotta (bread), and these terms are often used interchangeably. Interestingly, the Marathi word chapat (चापट) means “slap” or “flat,” referring to the traditional method of shaping the dough—by slapping and rotating it between wetted palms to form thin, round discs.

Chapati is a staple food across the Indian subcontinent and is also widely consumed by expatriate communities around the world. It spread to regions such as Central Asia, Southeast Asia, East Africa, and the Caribbean through Indian immigrants, especially merchants, making it a truly global Indian flatbread.
